With the explosion of visual works, comics drawn by AI, a word from the legendary animation director Hayao Miyazaki has recently been “dug out”. Not surprisingly, the Studio Ghibli director’s share garnered a lot of consensus from the online community.
Who is Hayao Miyazaki?
Hayao Miyazaki was born on January 5, 1941 in Tokyo, Japan. He is an animator, cartoonist, director, screenwriter and co-founder of the famous Studio Ghibli. During his illustrious career, Hayao Miyazaki created many masterpieces. The most famous of these is Spirited Away, which won the Japanese animation industry a rare Oscar.
Miyazaki is known for staying true to his hand-drawn cartoon style. Although this style makes him and the film crew pay more effort, he is personally willing to work hard to create a good work. In addition, the director is not too fond of new animation technology, especially artificial intelligence drawing technology.

Director Hayao Miyazaki is ‘disgusted’ by artificial intelligence technology
In 2016, director Hayao Miyazaki came into contact with an AI-based motion loading technology-artificial intelligence. According to the production team, they wanted to create a device that could paint like a human being — even “bringing ideas that the human mind can’t imagine”. While ambitious, AI technology was still limited at the time, so the products they created were somewhat misshapen. AI at the time could only recognize movements of the head and a few parts of the body, so the movements they created were not normal. In order to keep the artificial intelligence in use, the production team suggested that they could use this technology in games or movies with zombies.
After hearing the information about AI technology, director Hayao Miyazaki immediately refused. The reason he gave was because the technology was not suitable and not mature enough to be used. The director also said that the AI-generated images also brought back memories related to his disabled friend.
He had to work really hard to high five with me. Remembering him keeps me from watching everything or enjoying what’s on screen. The creators of a product like this must not have thought about such pain. I feel terrible.
I feel like we are slowly approaching the end of the world. People temporarily lose faith in themselves.

Director Hayao Miyazaki said he would not use the technology. Using them indiscriminately is an insult to the community, he said.
Although the above statement was made in 2016, recently, the sharing of editing and recording director Hayao Hayao was reposted on social networking sites and received a lot of comments. Some viewers feel that AI is so much better now that studios can use them. Others agree with Miyazaki that AI technology is something that the art production industry should not use or abuse.
Personally, what do you think? Is the fact that director Hayao Miyazaki is “disgusted” with artificial intelligence technology still true today? Is AI enough for anime now? Should the Anime Industry Use Artificial Intelligence? Please leave a comment so we can chat.
